In a night revelation, the Holy Spirit spoke to me, just a night before this article was written. Please go with me patiently:
A close friend made a statement that really hurt me in the presence of people. Immediately, I exited the scene, out of the feelings of betrayal. But on my way, my spirit would not let me rest. Then I turned back, went to him, and made him realize how badly his statement hurt me. However, he didn’t admit it at that moment. At any rate, we both started going back home and as soon as we got home, about opening the door, he sustained an injury on his nose. Did I have to dillydally or shilly-shally (waste time) considering whether or not to help him? No, not really; I offered prompt help.
Dear reader of this article, pause and think, what’s the big deal about the above ‘dream experience’ I just shared? Well, if that was the original thought that came to your mind, then you reasoned like me because I nearly trivialized it until the Holy Spirit shed more light on it that Love and forgiveness are inextricably linked with each other.
In the world of statistics and econometrics, we may describe love as a stationary variable. Two terms here: stationary and variable. Let’s start with the latter – variable.
Love is a variable because it helps in explaining the worthwhileness of relationships between two or more parties. Indeed love is the most important factor or feature a believer must possess if he must have a good relationship with God and men. Love can be perceived as a variable that tends to its normal state.
In simple parlance, a stationary variable, at the present time, maintains a constant ‘behaviour,’ having a good relationship with its normal (equilibrium) state OR it is a variable which, before long, converges to its normal state. In the context of love, the phrase ‘normal state’ refers to a good relationship with God and men. In simple terms, love maintains a constant behaviour towards others irrespective of what they do (good or bad).
Love, as a stationary variable, has a finite memory. This means that even if there is a ‘shock’ to it that makes it deviate from its normal state, in a short while, that shock will die out and the variable gets normal again; the shock will not be remembered for life, it is temporary. Recall that in physics, with respect to simple pendulum, if you hit the ball, it oscillates for a period and later stops.
Now, friend, do you remember that as a child, you had a finite memory such that if your mother spanked you and you cried and left her, in no distant time, you’d go back to her? Dear one, that is the kind of memory that is required of everybody who wants to lead a life of love and make heaven.
Matthew 18:3 “…and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
Think about this – you need to be humble to say I am sorry to someone you offended and you need extra grace for humility to seek reconciliation with someone who hurt you. Possessing the memory of a child plus his humility is what helps you out here.
Note that it is this finite memory that God referred to when He said
“their sins and iniquities I will remember no more (Hebrews 8: 12, 10: 17).
How about Jesus Christ? Simon Peter, his very close ally and head of the twelve (12) disciples, denied him thrice; but after he (Peter) had wept and asked for forgiveness, Christ did not only forgive him but still entrusted His lamb and sheep to Peter as an oversea (John 21:15 – 17).
“…love does not take account of the evil done to it.”1Cor. 13: 5 (Amplified Version)
One of the manifestations of the absence of love is the presence of an unforgiving spirit. Apart from the spiritual implications of this, there are physical manifestations in the form of deterioration of one’s health, high blood pressure and so on.
As a matter of fact, the carrier of the spirit of unforgiveness carries excessive weight which would soon destroy him. Dear one, you may be struggling with this deadly spirit, what you need is an exchange – give this excess weight to the one who can help you. The name of this Helper is Jesus Christ.
Mat. 11: 28 – 30: Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Surrendering to Jesus means receiving the spirit of love with which you will live a life of good relationship with God and men, become a blessing to your generation and make heaven.
Fellow believer, if you find it difficult to forget wrongs done to you, what you need is a finite memory.
Believe God for it now and it will be yours. Love is the greatest thing: owe no man anything but love. God bless you
