Love is the language of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ which does not depend on colour, tribe, tongue or race. Many people will stand to condemn anything that contradicts love if the focus is towards themselves and they are on the receiving side.On the contrary many people who know what is expected of love are not ready to accept and make up their minds to do whatlove approves.
What then is love? Who is love? Who should show love? What is the price to pay and what are the benefits of love? The above questions and others you might be confused about relating to love will be answered as we proceed in this lesson together.
Love (and I mean the God kind of love) is the expression of oneself to another without selfishly expecting something in return. Love is giving all to satisfy the desires of others who are in need. God is the expression of true love because He did everything to show it.
“And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field;upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life :and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”Genesis 3:14-15 (KJV)
The above scripture reveals that, after Adam sinned,God immediately opened a page of His love towards us who are descendant of Adam. His love for man constrained Him to stop him from eating from the tree of life so that he does not become eternally condemned like the devil. He did not cast man away forever but immediately began a reconciliation plan. This was the demonstration of God’s love towards us all. He demonstrated His love for us by sending Jesus Christ to save us.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”( John 3:16 KJV).
The love of God toward us is not determined by what we have done, what we are doing or what we are going to do. It is a choice He made born out of His own will.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son; much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”( Romans 5:8-10. KJV)
God demonstrated His love to us in our filthy state when we were supposedto be hated for our wrong doing. While you are still in your sins and doing those bad stuffs, He loves you even thoughyou have the feeling that nobody cares. Even when the feeling of guilt hasoverwhelmed your heart, know that God loves you and Jesus Christ has already paid the supreme price of dying for you. His death signifies an act of divine substitute for the human race.
Adam sold us into sin through disobedience. Adam was a manhence God required that a man should also restore the human race.He sent Jesus Christ who was divinely conceived to carry out His restoration plan. He called Jesus our brother and friend. There is no better way to express love. What a loving father we serve!
“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” Romans 5:19
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” John 15:13
The love of God for men exhibited through Jesus Christ brought righteousness to man.You do not have too much to be a recipient of His love. You only need to accept His offer with your heart and this will make you a righteous man.Immediately you confess what you have believed in your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, you will be integrated into the family of the redeemed as a result of the salvation of your soul.
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10.
God saved us and gave us His love nature at salvation so we can walk in love. Love is the fulfilling of the law for us in the new covenant. Love is not self-seeking (Romans 13:10b). Once a man repents and becomes saved, God clears off the records of all the bad things he has done by the blood of His son Jesus. In the same way believers in Jesus Christ are required to forgive others who wrong us irrespective of how much we may have been hurt.
Some believers who claim to be following Jesus Christ do not have this in mind. This is why they keep a list of those who have offended them in their heart. Some believers will only love those who fellowship with them in the same church. This is not right and is not in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ on love.
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for hemaketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same ? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:43-48
Jesus Christ expects us to demonstrate the nature of God by reflecting His love life in all that we do. We are to follow the example of God our father and our master Jesus Christ when it comes to love.We are to do what we see Jesus doing, if we are truly His followers. Jesus Christ gave us a model of love in that He preached to and ate with sinners, casted out devils from those that were possessed of demons and did not kill them, instructed those that were hypocritical to repent of their sin, healed the ear of the servant of the high priest who came to arrest Him in the garden of Gethsemane, prayed for his killers to be forgiven of their sin, etc.
You may say “I am not Jesus Christhence that is not my business”. Remember, if you are not like Him you have no part in him and in the kingdom He promised those awaiting His second coming. Therefore, God expects us to love everyone around us irrespective of their faith, social class and lifestyle. Anyone who claims to love God whom he has not seen but hates his brothers and sisters around him whom he can see is a liar and deceiver (1John 2:9-11).
“…and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
Love requires a lot of physical and spiritual sacrifices to secure its eternal reward. We are to love those who despitefully use us and hate us. We are to plant a seed of love by our actions, for which we will reap a thousand fold in years to come on earth or hereafter in eternity. Always consider the life of Jesus Christ, how He loved selflessly. Do not mock someone behind them. Learn not to announce to everyone around that you helped someone. Do not waste your food when there are neighbours around who do not have food to eat.
We are to walk in love with the aim of pleasing God. Without love no man can say he loves God.Love must be expressed to someone else. Remember the words of Jesus “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was ahungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:…”
Beloved of God, remember that all that are in this world are temporal and transient. Let us labour for love. “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister”.
Love remains the only way to show the nature of God, hence it is the excellent way to live a fulfilled Christian life.
